What is covered in the safety riding training?

The session is built around the mistakes that actually cause crashes in Bangladeshi traffic, rather than around theory. The first block is bike control — mounting and dismounting, moving off in gear, clutch feel, braking in a straight line and emergency braking. The second block is road position and observation: lane positioning, shoulder checks, blind spot awareness and anticipating hazards from pedestrians, rickshaws and livestock.

The third block is riding technique — cornering at a safe speed, braking before the turn rather than in it, and holding a line on a wet or uneven surface. The fourth block covers hazard perception and defensive riding, using the actual roads around the showroom, including the busy G L Roy Road and the Rangpur–Saidpur bypass.

Sessions are practical. Most of the time is spent on the motorcycle, not on slides. If you have never ridden before, tell the trainer in advance so the session can start on the slowest model in the showroom and progress to a larger machine.

The process has two stages. First you obtain a learner licence from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, which requires a filled application, your national ID or birth certificate, a proof-of-address document, a passport-size photograph and the prescribed fee. Second, after holding the learner licence for the required minimum period — typically 30 days — you can apply for the permanent motorcycle driving licence.

The permanent licence requires a written or computerised test on road signs and traffic rules, and in many cases a practical riding test on the motorcycle itself. Applicants must also submit a medical certificate confirming that they meet the vision and physical requirements for the vehicle class. Documents are checked at the time of both applications, so keep the original papers.

If a rider is going to carry a passenger regularly, the passenger needs the same standard of gear.
